Happy Monday y’all and welcome to all the new subscribers, the support means so much to me and I really appreciate it! I had a great weekend (that isn’t even over yet, God bless America and whatever President’s day is). I spent a fair amount of time this weekend watching the NBA (Basketball) All-Star Weekend events, and noticed something interesting this year- TikTok influencers. It’s been interesting to see the impact TikTok has had on American Pop Culture and it sounds like it’s having a similar impact in India. It’ll be very interesting to see how the IPL and the teams integrate TikTok this season because TikTok has really blown up in the country over the last 12 months (Also the IPL should totally have an All Star Weekend too with a skills challenge, celebrity game and All Stars Game as well).

  • http://bit.ly/2USZ58N (Mint): More TikTok news today. TikTok content creators have taken over Connaught Place (the central shopping district in New Delhi). The unique feature of TikTok, compared to other social network platforms, is that anyone’s video can go viral, regardless of how many followers they initially have. The platform rewards even new and first-time content creators, which is why you’re seeing a lot of Indians “blow up” on the platform. And with all the influencers & content consumers spending more time on the platform, the brands are slowly following and paying creators to promote their products. I still have no clue about the long term viability of TIkTok as a platform, but they are certainly having their moment giving a lot of Indian millennials their 15 minutes of fame.
  • http://bit.ly/2SNZK8U (Sports Business): When I wrote about ShareChat & Jeet11 last week, I also started looking into Dream11 and found some interesting news. Dream11 has been running a sports live-streaming platform called FanCode for about a year and has acquired the rights to some key sporting events- the NBA & the NFL (along with the I-League, & some cricket series). What’s more interesting is that one of the cofounders of FanCode is the ex-MD of NBA India. Currently the NBA and NFL have minuscule markets in India, but basketball at least is growing quite fast with the NBA investing more in India with the US-China geopolitical tensions. If Dream11 & FanCode can integrate a basketball fantasy game along with the live-streaming of the games, they could build a pretty substantial side-business out of it alongside it’s cricket fantasy game (The Fantasy Sports Market in the US is roughly ~$8B).
